In this time of tragedy at our doorstep, we are all reminded of the

compassionate individuals, we are compelled to reach out a helping hand
to the weary, needy and affected people in these devastated areas

Red Cross To Test
Drive Innovative Fiberglass Long Tail Fishing Boats in Phuket Thailand
by Duane Lennie
Officials from the French Red Cross and Thai Red Cross will launch
one of Thailand’s newest and most technically innovative products with
the test drive of the Low Maa™ – Omni Marine’s new fiberglass replica of
a 10-meter traditional long tail fishing boat – at 10:00 AM, Thursday,
August 18, 2005 on Chalong Pier in Phuket.
Officials from the French Red Cross and Thai Red Cross will launch
one of Thailand’s newest and most technically innovative products with
the test drive of the Low Maa™ – Omni Marine’s new fiberglass replica of
a 10-meter traditional long tail fishing boat – at 10 a.m., Thursday,
August 18, 2005 on Chalong Pier in Phuket.
Joseph Pernot of the French Red Cross, along with Thai Red Cross
officials, will be on hand to evaluate the new boat as a possible
replacement for Thai fishermen who lost their boats during the December
26 tsunami.
By design, the Low Maa™ helps to save natural resources while preserving
the look and feel of the traditional Thai long tail fishing vessels. The
design is the group effort of several marine professionals who came
together after the tsunami to address the problem of forest depletion
resulting from the mass rebuilding of an estimated 4,000 wooden boats.
Omni Marine, in partnership with Star Marine Engineering, Fadara Yachts
and 3DW Moulds have designed and are building Low Maa™ branded boats in
Bangkok and Krabi Province. Design improvements to the hull also results
in a more fuel-efficient and sea worthy boat due to reduced front-end
drag and a more streamlined keel. (For photos see: http://www.omnitrips.com/longtail-boats-tsunami-phuket-thailand.html
)
Omni Marine, a Phuket based company, is currently building boats for the
H.R.H Princess Mahachakri Sirindhorn’s Special Task Force, which is
supplying boats to Thai fishing families affected by the tsunami.
